POWERING THE TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC MOBILITY IN EUROPE

Compliance with the Paris Agreement and maintaining employment in the EU car, van and lorry industry require a gradual move away from fossil fuels, particularly petroleum, natural gas and carbon-based power generation. The new European CO2 standards, the green tax and local driving restrictions could mean the end of the internal combustion engine.

DISRUPTING THE MOBILITY MARKET (MaaS)

Servitization and digitalisation are global trends upending many sectors. Transport and mobility are no exception. Decreasing dependence on private vehicles has been high on the political agenda in recent years. The needs and habits of travellers have also evolved, and there are increasing demands for more flexibility in their mobility options. Simultaneously, a growing number of shared mobility services namely car sharing, moto sharing, motorbike sharing, demand-responsive transit, carpooling, etc. are progressively becoming commonplace in cities worldwide, serving new consumer needs and life styles. The momentum for MaaS is high in Catalonia, with a burgeoning local ecosystem in which the public sector is developing very ambitious initiatives and projects in the field, with a bunch of private companies that are already providing new mobility services, and many other that are planning to enter the market.

GROWTH OF ELECTRIC MOBILITY IN THE NETHERLANDS – A DSO PERSPECTIVE

The growth of electric passenger cars and buses in the Netherlands has been very significant, and it is of interest to understand how this growth is stimulated by the Government. Charging of those vehicles on the electricity grid is of relevance, since ‘smart charging’ is required in order to minimize expensive investments in grid expansion. The Netherlands, together with Norway, play a leading role in Europe regarding e-mobility. The Netherlands have the largest public charging infrastructure and a very well developed industry for charging points. ElaadNL is an international thought leader regarding standardization of charging protocols and cyber security for charging points.

DEVELOPING THE CYCLE NETWORK. 8 SUGGESTIONS FROM LONDON

From defining future network planning with a time horizon to 2041 to precisely deciding the cycle tracks to be built in the next few years, my lecture provides a step-by-step explanation of the process currently underway in the metropolitan area of London for gradually developing an optimum cycle network. This network contemplates both current and potential demand (travel that uses motorised means of transport today but could be replaced by bicycles), reduction of road traffic risk for all vulnerable users, promotion of multimodal travel and the areas of London where the highest growth of workers and residents is expected.
